Malindi Cult Examined By Branham Cult Expert

May 5, 2023

Spanish theologian, author, and cult specialist José de Segovia has examined Paul Mackenzie's "Message" cult sect and has given some surprising new insight into the Branhamites in Kenya.  Mackenzie, who was radicalized by William Branham's sermons and convinced several families to commit mass suicide through starvation, was surprisingly influential.  Over 3,000 people were recruited into "the Message" cult through Mackenzie, 1,000 of them in the Malindi group.

Paul Mackenzie was working as a taxi driver in Nairobi when, in 2003, he left the capital to move to the coast and open a small church.'He was following the teachings of William Branham, one of the most controversial Pentecostal leaders of he beginning of the last century. He established the church in his wife's village in Malindi, which is how his group is popularly known', explains José de Segovia, a Spanish theologian, writer and specialist in cults.[1]

Journalists have recognized the similarities to Jonestown,[2] another tragic event in world history that was orchestrated by a minister radicalized by Branham's Latter Rain doomsday theology.  In the Jonestown event, over 900 people committed suicide by drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid in Jonestown, Guyana.

De Segovia noted that the Kenyan case resembled Jonestown due to the fact that both cult leaders migrated their groups after confronting authorities.  In Jones's case, People Temple formed a remote jungle commune in South America.  In Mackenzie's case, a remote jungle commune was formed in Kenya.

'The Kenyan case may remind us of Jonestown, the People's Temple community that Jim Jones moved from San Francisco to Guyana, because after confronting the authorities he began an exodus like Jones, which led him to form a remote jungle commune, like Jonestown, where 110 have died of starvation to 'find Jesus'[3]

This new event in Kenya has raised concerns among former members of the Branhamite sect.  William Branham's cult of personality and its many splinter groups indoctrinate their victims with Branham's End-of-Days theology.  This theology was largely comprised of political propaganda pushed by white supremacy leaders and associated with the political events of the 1940s-1960s.  Today, those indoctrinated have been stirred by recent events in today's social, economic, and political world through Branham's sermons.

In March, 2022, Joseph Branham (the current central figure of the "Message" cult) urged ministers in the cult and its various splinter groups to "only" listen to William Branham's sermons, declaring that the Rapture was imminent,[4] which according to Branham's theology, means the End of the World is also imminent. In many parts of the world, groups of "Message" cult members are relocating or migrating to form communities.  Former members are concerned that some of these communities may be radicalized.  That concern is increased after witnessing just how dangerous a radicalized leader such as Mackenzie can become.

Cult expert De Segovia advises communities to avoid cultish deviations and simply stay with the Bible.  There is grave danger in continually focusing on End-of-Days prophecy, anti-government propaganda, and conspiracy theories that have been generated by Branham and other cult leaders associated with the Branhamite sect.

According to De Segovia, 'the best prevention to avoid these cultist deviations is, first of all, to follow the teaching of the Bible and not prophecies, such as that of Mackenzie or William Branham'.
