Shelby Hoffer is a former member of Youth With A Mission whose experience spans 18 years across multiple YWAM bases, ministries, leadership settings, and international contexts. She has served in locations including Colorado Springs, Kona, Perth, Cambodia, the Philippines, Haiti, Switzerland, and other parts of Europe, and has also participated in YWAM leadership and member-care spaces. Her time inside the organization gives her a broad perspective on YWAM's internal culture, its decentralized structure, its emphasis on calling, missions, hearing the voice of God, and the formation of what many inside the movement call "YWAM DNA."
Since leaving YWAM, Shelby has worked to understand and name the systemic patterns she witnessed, including spiritual abuse, high-control religious dynamics, pressure to suppress critical thinking, financial and emotional manipulation, and the difficulty many former members face when trying to leave or speak out. Drawing from personal experience, client work, survivor stories, and ongoing research, Shelby brings a careful and compassionate voice to conversations about YWAM, religious trauma, missions culture, accountability, and the difference between experiences that feel good and systems that are truly healthy.
