Malindi Cult's Historical Links to Terrorism

April 30, 2023

Last week, Kenyan President William Ruto declared William Branham's "Message" cult of personality to be terrorism[1] after Message cult leader Paul Mackenzie manipulated the minds of his Malindi cult into mass suicide through starvation.  As the investigation into the Shakhola Massacre continues the body count has reached 110.[2]

The sect led by Mackenzie belongs to the "Branhamist" current of Pentecostal Christianity. This current owes its name to William M. Branham (1909-1965), a US preacher who came from unitary Pentecostalism (which identifies Jesus with the Father and the Holy Spirit, denying the Trinity ) . Branham's doctrines and practices, which emphasized everything related to the second coming of Christ and healings and miracles, were rejected by the Christian denominations, and his movement was considered a cult from very early on, but he quickly spread throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia. And precisely on the African continent, many groups remain that are the direct heirs of it. In fact, the South African government even banned his proselytizing campaigns.[3]

While suicide through starvation is a relatively unusual thing in the Branhamite sect of Pentecostalism, the links to terrorism are not, and suicide — even mass suicide — are not.  The key to understanding the origin of these links to terrorism is found in Mackenzie's 2017 arrest for radicalization against the education system.[4]  This is a very common theme in Branhamite sects, with a very clear historical origin.  Even in the United States, many children in William Branham's cult of personality are forbidden to have proper education.   Some people within our support network admit that the "Message" church they escaped did not permit parents to send their children to public schools.  Some claim that they were forbidden education past grade school, and some are fully uneducated.  Most cult members in the sect, however, do not realize the history of domestic terrorism behind William Branham's doctrine against education.

William Branham's church in Jeffersonville, Indiana, was planted by Rev. Roy E. Davis, a leader of multiple domestic terrorist organizations.  Davis was the second-in-command of the 1915 Ku Klux Klan under Colonel William Joseph Simmons,[5]  The Klan was a domestic terrorist organization that persecuted African Americans and Jews, and was nearly disbanded in the early 1920s for controlling local and state governments in the United States.  Georgia Congressman William D. Upshaw, a strong promoter of William Branham's "Message" sect,[6] defended the terrorist organization in Washington D.C.  During the Congressional Hearings, it was learned that Upshaw was a member of the Klan.[7]

After ordaining Branham as a member of his Pentecostal Baptist Church of God denomination of Pentecostalism,[8] Davis started rising through the ranks of other white supremacy groups as supremacy in the United States was forced to go underground in hiding.  When it re-emerged as the third wave of the Ku Klux Klan, Davis emerged as the Imperial Wizard — the highest-ranking leader of the Klan.  In 1961, when Davis proudly displayed his Klan robes to reporters in Shreveport, Louisiana, he claimed that he was "the only Klansman who can boast of having all the degrees of the Klan conferred on him.  He said that he helped write the constitution, by-laws and ritual of the original Klan when it was revived in 1915."[9]

By 1963, Davis had become a leading, militant force against the American education system.  As the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacy groups such as the National States Rights Party (organized in Branham's hometown of Jeffersonville Indiana[10]) battled to fight racial integration of the public school system, Branham's sermons transitioned to include key elements of the white supremacist propaganda.  When speaking to audiences who approved of the white supremacy agenda, Branham declared himself to be a segregationalist instead of an integrationist; Branham took sides with the white supremacists who opposed racial integration.[11]  Branham was very outspoken against Civil Rights leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr.[12]  He sided with the Klan against television programs such as "I Love Lucy" that promoted interracial marriage.[13]  Branham's sermons were filled with racial slurs, racial profiling, and various forms of discrimination.  These sermons are published as tracts by Spoken Word Publications and distributed by Voice of God Recordings of Jeffersonville, Indiana.  Many of these tracts contain hate speech against Civil Rights leaders of the 50s and 60s, from protestors in the news to President John F. Kennedy.  Several of these tracts were found by investigators on the scene at the Shakahola Massacre.

We want to get her in Bible school somewhere and away from the public school.[14]
We give them integration. Now it's worse than it ever was.[15]
One of the greatest mistakes this nation made, it made it on November the 11th, this year. That was its great, fatal mistake. One of the greatest mistakes that the colored race ever made, was down in Louisiana and over in there, when they voted for Kennedy,[16]
Oh, you see, it's this intellectual day that we're living in. Education, civilization, and the modern trend of the day, is all of the devil. "Civilization of the devil?" Yes, sir! The Bible said it is.[17]
