The Angel Emma
Rev. Paul Cain, a member of William Branham's "Message" cult of personality from 1951[1] until his death in 2019,[2] claimed to have interacted with an angel during his healing revivals. Leaders from the Kansas City Prophets and Joel's Army later gave this angel the name "Emma" and asserted that Emma collaborated with Cain as the Kansas City Fellowship was established during the 1980s.[3] These assertions were widely publicized for the first time in 2003 by Todd Bentley, who announced that Emma had assisted him during his revival meetings.

Now let me talk about an angelic experience with Emma. Twice Bob Jones asked me about this angel that was in Kansas City in 1980: "Todd, have you ever seen the angel by the name of Emma?" He asked me as if he expected that this angel was appearing to me. Surprised, I said, "Bob, who is Emma?" He told me that Emma was the angel that helped birth and start the whole prophetic movement in Kansas City in the 1980s.[4]
- Todd Bentley
According to Bentley, angels have no gender, but Emma came physically as a human female for a purpose.[5] Emma bore a resemblance to Kathryn Kuhlman and appeared as a 22-year-old with the ancient wisdom of ages past.[6] She glided across the platform floor and then moved down the aisles, sprinkling gold dust among the attendees. Bentley explained that this act was meant for "revelation and financial breakthrough." Reportedly, the presence of Emma led to the collection of thousands of dollars in offerings.[7] Bentley later denied this claim.[8]
Emma apparently created a lot of unusual commotion in the revival meetings. In one instance, the pastor's wife was "whacked by the Holy Ghost" and began "running around barking like a dog, squawking like a chicken, and prophesying.
During this visitation the pastor's wife (it was an AOG church) got totally whacked by the Holy Ghost- she began running around barking like a dog or squawking like a chicken as a powerful prophetic spirit came on her. Also, as this prophetic anointing came on her, she started getting phone numbers of complete strangers and calling them up on the telephone and prophesying over them. She would tell them that God gave her their telephone number and then would give them words of knowledge. Complete strangers. Then angels started showing up in the church.[9]
- The Berean Call
NAR leader Rick Joyner asked Kansas City Prophet Bob Jones about Emma, who Jones said represented an "outpouring of healing."[10] According to Jones, Emma manifested in the beautiful physical form of a female, symbolizing a mother's compassion. Joyner reported witnessing the effects of Emma's visits to Bob Jones, noting that her presence resulted in healing.[11] According to Jones, he had used the name "Irma" for the angel but was instead attempting to say "Emma."[12]
The Kansas City Fellowship's claim of an angelic being leading their revival is not unprecedented. This group, as a continuation of the Latter Rain movement's Manifest Sons of God, built upon William Branham's earlier assertions of an angelic presence in his own revivals. Starting in 1947, Branham introduced the idea of an angel as part of his stage persona[13] and directed his prayers to this angel instead of directly to God. During revival meetings, Branham told participants that his angel stood near.[14] Though Branham claimed that his angel came in the physical form of a man,[15] he also claimed that angels had no gender.[16]
Angel of God, I do not see You. But I know that You are standing near. Please, Thou knowest my heart, and know how I love these people. Stand by me tonight[17]
