Unleavened Bread Ministries

Unleavened Bread Ministries (UBM) is an apocalyptic faith-healing sect. The group makes use of William Branham's alleged 1933 prophecies as a doctrinal foundation[1] and as confirmation for newer predictions.[2] Former members of UBM believe the group is a cult due to the undue influence given to the central figure, David Eells.[3] UBM indoctrinates its members to believe that a second civil war is imminent and that Christians will soon be forced to "fight with 'flesh and blood'" to overthrow the United States legal and political systems. According to Eels, this is a battle to be fought with the "spoken word,"[4] the term used by many leaders in William Branham's Manifest Sons of God splinter group of Latter Rain.

Should Christians physically fight with "flesh and blood" to "take America back" from the moral, political and legal corruption it is now falling into? God told me that the Scriptural understanding of this would save the lives of many Christians. The Word shows us that a civil war is coming to America and that Christians will get the blame when the right-wing loses. Great persecution is coming. Make sure it's not your fault.[5]

According to former UBM Members and the patterns defined in Dr. Steven Hassan's BITE Model of Authoritarian Control,[6] UBM shares attributes of a destructive cult. Former members are "demonized," while current members are forbidden to speak to them. The central figure is often compared to "Jesus Christ" while former members are "Judases." Critical information is withheld, to the extent that the public perception of the group "is not what it appears to be."[7]

The UBM congregation is forbidden contact with them through the "Faction doctrine." In this doctrine, anyone who speaks against UBM or David Eells, even with a true, biblical eye witness of sin, is considered to be a slanderer and demon possessed. Follows are told that if they talk to these people, read their writings, or "receive their accusation" - they too will become demonized. A biblical correction is labeled "Korah rebellion" with David Eells cast as Moses. Or they are called "Judases" with David Eells cast as Jesus Christ.[8]

In 2009, David Eells was convinced that Hillary Clinton would become the President of the United States, in what he dubbed the "final ascension to the throne."[9] Eells began referencing the version of William Branham's predictions after Branham's stage persona began claiming that a "female president" would lead to the destruction of the United States. In that version of the alleged 1933 prophecy, Branham claimed that either a "beautiful woman clothed in splendor" or the "Catholic Church" would rule before the U.S. was annihilated. Eells marked Branham's prophecies in red to point out the impending doomsday.[10]

UBM follows the anti-biblical pattern for eschatology used throughout Latter Rain. Former members describe practicing divination, numerology, and astrology as was common in Latter Rain sermons and literature.[11] The group follows the Latter Rain's "five-fold ministry" doctrine and, like many splinter groups of Latter Rain, has progressed into an extremist version of that doctrine. The central figure is, according to former members, an authority on both doctrine and scripture that cannot be questioned or corrected.

Not a five fold ministry- but a one fold ministry. It is Nicolaitan, even as it teaches against the Nicolaitan system. There is no opinion operating there that goes against David. The one time true elders attempted to bring correction to David, in public, in July 2011, they were refused. And at that time, three elders left UBM. They have since repented of partaking and promoting false doctrine.[12]

That same year, UBM received significant negative publicity after Wisconsin's Leilani Neumann was convicted of second-degree reckless homicide for failing to give her 11-year-old daughter proper medical care. Madeline Kara Neumann died of untreated diabetes in March 2008. According to prosecutors, Newman sought spiritual assistance from UBM while Madeline was comatose. Leilana chose the UBM's apparent advice of "faith healing" which resulted in her daughter's death.

In Wisconsin, a jury convicted Leilani Neumann, of Weston, Wis., of second-degree reckless homicide in May for failing to trust her 11-year-old daughter Madeline Kara Neumann to a doctor. She died of untreated diabetes in March 2008. Prosecutors argued she killed the girl by ignoring obvious symptoms — she couldn't walk or talk and was believed to be in a coma — until it was too late. The mother testified she didn't realize her daughter was so ill and did all she could to help in line with the family's belief in faith healing. Neumann sought the spiritual assistance of the online evangelical Christian ministry Unleavened Bread Ministries.[13]
